Northern Advance - Obituary Thursday May 29, 1879

Killed on the track - on Monday morning about 6 o'clock, and engine on the H & N.W. Railway, while on its way back from Barrie to make up the morning train which starts at 7, ran into a man walking on the track, near Vair's crossing, and who appeared utterly unconscious of the whistles that were given to warn him of danger. When the engine stopped and the man was picked up, he found to be Wm. Demerline, an old farmer, who has been living in Boy's Block for some time past. He was seriously hurt, it seemed, though there were few external marks of injury. Taken to his home the injured man died about 10 o'clock. Dr. Watson held an inquest on the remains in the afternoon, at which a verdict of accidental death was returned, the railway company being exhonerated from all blame in connection with the accident. The evidence showed that the old man - he was 73 years - was out hunting up a stray team of horses, and, being very deaf, it was concluded he did not hear the approaching engine.

The Examiner, Barrie - Obituary Thursday May 29, 1879

FATAL RAILWAY ACCIDENT. An old man named William Demoline, a long resident of the township of Oro, and recently located in the township of Vespra, was killed by a passing train on the line of the Hamilton & N.W. Railway, near Barrie Station, on Monday morning last. The deceased was severely affected with deafness, and was preceeding the train by some distance on the track, when the engineer first saw him.The engine whistled several times, but, owing to the unfortunate man's deafness, he could not be made to hear, and it was then impossible to stop the train in time to save his life the accident with fatal injuries followed. The body was badly mangled. Coroner Watson held an inquest on the circumstances attending the death...no blame can be attached to the engine driver...
